aston, pa – Taking advantage of a Steinway buyback incentive from Jacobs Music Company, Northley Middle School was able to acquire a beautiful Boston grand piano that absolutely delights Choral Director Liz Hazlett.
The 6-foot-4-inch Boston GP-193 Performance Edition II is a perfect fit for the choral room at Northley, where nearly 300 of 800 students in grades 6-8 participate in the choral program.
Part of the Penn-Delco School District in Delaware County, Northley experienced a major makeover in 2013-14 that included enhancements to music, choral and instrumental classrooms. Built-in tiers were eliminated in favor of portable risers, walls and ceilings acoustically treated and rooms enlarged to create more functional space. “It was exciting to work with the district and staff on a thorough building renovation that allows the school to function properly for the education of their students,” says Christopher Peters, project manager with Marotta/Main Architects in Lancaster.
Initial plans called for a baby grand piano which posed a challenge for the school’s shopworn Steinway that had not been well cared for over the years. “Our district certainly enjoyed cost savings on a large capital expense with the Steinway buyback, and the folks at Jacobs made sure we got the most out of our dollars,” Ms. Hazlett says. “They helped us find just the right piano for our program. I couldn’t be more thrilled with this purchase.”
The new Steinway-designed Boston offers a distinctively warm sound and superb action. “It is a blessing to our program,” she continues. “My student accompanists love playing it, and all my students are thrilled to have such a high quality piano in the classroom.”
Northley represents one of many dreams realized through the Jacobs-Steinway Educational Partnership Program. The music initiative assists regional educators with piano leasing, master classes, seminars, special promotional offers and invitations to one-of-a-kind performances. “What Liz Hazlett does is impressive –
leading nearly 40 percent of the entire student body in song,” says Robert Rinaldi, senior vice president at Jacobs. “Middle school is a wonderful formative period for young adults to explore the world of music. It was a pleasure to provide a fine instrument within their budget that we trust will inspire their students to reach even greater heights.”
